When looking for a new car it is vital that you test-drive the car first. If you have never owned that type or class of vehicle before, it is a good idea to test-drive several different models from that class of car. This way you can compare what different manufacturers have to offer.
Start by looking at vehicles that will fit on your drive or in your garage. In addition, consider whether the cars are economical enough for you. Look at insurance, servicing, tyre, road tax and congestion charge costs. Lastly, consider fuel economy. Dealers have most of this information readily available. In addition, this information is available on-line on many sites of which Parkers and Which Car are the best for this type of information.
Make yourself a checklist and fill it in for each car after you take them for a test drive. Ask yourself is the car accessible? E.g., Can passengers and myself get in and out easily? Is the car comfortable for everyone that will use it? Can the seats, steering and mirrors be adjusted enough for all users?
Take the final few cars that you really like on more detailed test drives. If you want to use the car for your family take them with you on the final test drive. At this stage also check that all their belongings fit in the car and that the boot is big enough to accommodate your work and family needs.
Make sure that in the final test drive you include driving in town, on country roads and on dual carriageways. This will allow you to assess whether you like the way the car drives and make sure that engine noise is not an issue.
To be 100% sure you are buying the correct car consider hiring that model for a few days and use it on typical journeys. This may seem expensive, but if is worth spending the money to ensure you are not stuck driving a car you do not like for several years.
